A Wedding Weekend in Salida, Colorado at Blue Coyote Ranch | Matt & Keri

When Matt first met Keri, he jokingly asked her to be his "wifey." The timing wasn't exactly ideal.

The two shared mutual friends and happened to cross paths at a local bar after college. Seeing Matt talking with her friend Rachel, Keri assumed he was bothering her and stepped in to help. "She's married," Keri informed him. Matt laughed. Rachel wasn't a stranger at all, but an old friend. Looking at Keri's hand, he replied, "I don't see a ring on your finger. Do you want to be my wifey for the night?" What started as a misunderstanding turned into a ten-year love story. That night kicked off a ten-year romance that would culminate in a real proposal in another bar and another state.

Years later, while visiting Hot Springs, Arkansas, Matt spent an entire day carrying an engagement ring around waiting for the perfect moment. Eventually, sitting together inside The Ohio Club, he realized the perfect moment had already arrived in a bar similar to the very one they met in.

So he asked her again. “Will you be my wifey?” This time, for real.

After getting engaged and eventually moving to Colorado, Matt and Keri knew they wanted their wedding to reflect the life they were building together. More than anything, they wanted the people they loved most to experience Colorado the way they had come to know it themselves. Like many couples planning a wedding weekend in Salida, Matt and Keri were looking for a venue that gave their guests a reason to stay a while rather than drive in and out for the day.

Their celebration eventually became a summer three-day wedding weekend at Blue Coyote Ranch, a ranch wedding venue near Salida known for its mountain views, onsite lodging, and space to gather family and friends in one place for an entire weekend.

Why They Chose Blue Coyote Ranch for Their Colorado Wedding Weekend

For Keri, the connection was immediate. She had always dreamed of owning a ranch someday and raising animals, so walking onto the property felt less like touring a wedding venue and more like stepping into a version of a future she had imagined for years.

But what ultimately made Blue Coyote Ranch stand out among other Salida wedding venues wasn't just the scenery; it was the opportunity to spend real time with their guests.

Many of their friends and family would be traveling from out of state, and they didn't want everyone arriving a few hours before the ceremony and disappearing back to separate hotels at the end of the night.

With that in mind, the ranch's onsite lodging quickly moved to the top of their priority list. Rather than coordinating transportation between hotels, venues, and rental properties, they could keep everyone together in one place and spend more time with the people who had traveled so far to celebrate with them. That included their two dogs, who were able to be part of the celebration throughout the weekend.

As a pet-friendly wedding venue near Salida, Blue Coyote Ranch made it easy to include one more member of the family without adding extra logistics to the weekend.

One thing we hear from couples after a wedding weekend is that the memories they talk about most rarely happen on the official timeline. It's breakfast with family the morning after, staying up too late around a fire, and it’s having enough time to actually catch up with people you only see once every few years. That's the kind of experience Matt and Keri hoped to create, and by all accounts, they did!

The Welcome Dinner That Turned a Wedding Into a Weekend

Rather than treating Friday as simply an arrival day, Matt and Keri built an experience around it, something that really allows Blue Coyote Ranch to shine.

Guests gathered for a welcome dinner dressed in all white, and the rehearsal dinner followed that evening with a blue theme before everyone shifted the next day into neutral and jewel tones for the wedding itself.

The themed gatherings gave each evening its own personality, but what mattered most wasn't the dress code; it was the time that everyone spent together, and by the time the rehearsal dinner arrived, the wedding already felt well underway.

Friends had already shared meals together, family had settled into the property and gone hiking, and guests had a chance to ease into the weekend instead of trying to fit every conversation into a single evening.

A Ranch Wedding That Felt Like Colorado

When Saturday arrived, Matt and Keri leaned into everything they loved about Colorado ranch life, creating a celebration that felt perfectly at home in the Salida landscape, including Keri’s love of animals. Their dogs spent the day right alongside them, making appearances throughout the celebration and serving as another reminder that this wedding was built around the people, and animals, they loved most.

Keri made her entrance in a horse-drawn wagon, a detail that felt perfectly at home on the ranch property. With mountain views in every direction, the landscape was already doing most of the heavy lifting, and the ceremony didn't need much added to it.

After the ceremony, flower-adorned beer burros from Rocky Mountain Beverage Burros greeted guests carrying cold drinks and DIY wildflowers inspired nearly every design choice. Instead of elaborate floral installations, Keri and her friends created arrangements that felt connected to the landscape surrounding them, and it made for a fun activity the evening prior.

The reception unfolded beneath the piñon pines, where long farm tables stretched across the lawn and guests shared dinner with mountain views in every direction.

One of the most personal details even came from Matt himself. Wanting to contribute something meaningful to the celebration, he built a custom whiskey-barrel lighting installation that became a centerpiece of the reception space.

What stood out most was how naturally everything fit the setting! The wagon made sense, the outdoor dinner encouraged people to stay awhile, and the handcrafted wildflower displays felt right at home in the landscape. Luna Libations served custom cocktails inspired by the couple, including a blackberry margarita for Keri and a maple old fashioned for Matt and as the sun disappeared behind the mountains, guests danced beneath the open sky and celebrated late into the evening.

Why Wedding Weekends Work So Well at Blue Coyote Ranch

Years later, what stands out most isn't a specific timeline event for this couple; it's the feeling of a whole wedding weekend.

One advantage of hosting a wedding weekend at Blue Coyote Ranch is that everyone is already there. There isn't a rush of guests driving in from different hotels or leaving immediately after dinner. By the time the ceremony starts, people have already spent a day together, which changes the pace of the entire celebration.

Instead of spending the wedding day trying to catch up with everyone, couples can actually enjoy it, whether that is playing lawn games or dancing the night away.

It's easy to see how much the property shaped the experience, keeping everyone together in one place gave people more time with each other, and that extra time became one of the most meaningful parts of the celebration, (although some could argue it was the flower-adorned donkeys serving beer at the reception!)

What Made This Weekend Feel Like Them

What I'm sure all guests will remember about Matt and Keri's wedding weekend, is how personal every piece of it felt. The horse-drawn wagon wasn't chosen because it was trendy, the wildflowers weren't designed to impress anyone, and even the beer burros felt less like a wedding gimmick and more like an extension of the relaxed, Colorado-inspired atmosphere they wanted guests to experience.

The same was true of the weekend itself. By creating events before the wedding day and keeping everyone together onsite, Matt and Keri gave themselves something many couples wish they had more of on a wedding day, time.

And finally, they weren't afraid to ask for help.

As Matt and Keri put it: "Ask for help. If you don't have the budget for a day-of coordinator, assign jobs to your besties and delegate as much as you can."

Wedding weekends have a lot of moving pieces, but they also create some of the most meaningful experiences couples can share with their family and friends. Matt and Keri's celebration is proof that sometimes the best wedding memories aren't created during the ceremony at all, they're created in the extra time spent together surrounded by mountains and stars.
